Recycle Bins Appear Downtown
When I read heard the story - which I think was on Knoxnews - I got excited thinking that we were about to get curbside recycling downtown. We aren't. Still, maybe we are a step closer. Recycle bins have been placed for visitors to downtown to use. I hope they will. I spoke to one of the workers collecting from the bins and he said they were being utilized pretty heavily, already. If this goes well, maybe the program will be expanded. One of the questions looming are the bins an eyesore? Below are pictures of one in Krutch Park Extension, one on Market Square and the top of one so you get the idea. What do you think - a necessary improvement or an eyesore? You can take a survey and tell the city what you think.

It's an awesome idea and there are ways to get around the eyesore aspect. Most people are willing to do the right things if given an easy means in which to do them (in this case, recycling) - and this fits that bill precisely.
All the city needs to do is use strategic placement of the bins near shrubbery or other decorative aspects to minimize their visual impact. There is already money being invested in the upkeep of the Market Square/Krutch Park area, and once the camouflage is in place it won't take any more time to empty them than it does now!
AND, I bet there's a local nursery willing to donate shrubbery for a simple mention of their support in city literature, the Market Square newsletter, this blog, and other such things that are already being published...
Thanks for reading and posting, Yvette. Those are great ideas. Any readers own a nursery?
Hi. These bins are a pilot. If folks use them enough our plans are to replace them with much more attractive and appropriate receptacles.

That's nice to hear, though for the good they will do, I would have been willing to have them keep their current form, though, as Yvette said above, a little camouflage would be nice.
Very cool. Happy to hear we'll be able to easily recycle when downtown.
