Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
I've had a friend and a reader suggest that I might check out Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. I've listened and I'm very taken with the soulful sound. They don't like to be called retro, but they do remind me very much of the R and B I fell in love with in the early 1970's, like the Chi-lites, the Persauders, Al Green and the Staple Singers. Their latest album is I Learned the Hard Way which you can sample or buy through that link. If you follow the top link above you can select "album" and get a free download of the title track from the album.
Why all this info now? Because she and her band perform at the Bijou tonight. Tickets are $27.50 and I have no business spending the time or the money - but you know what? I might just not be able to stay away. So, why not check it out? Maybe I'll see you there.
In the meantime, I'm posting the video from the song "I Learned the Hard Way" for your enjoyment and so you can see if it's your thing. They had to be channeling that all-time great movie, "Shaft," when they made this video. A bit of a warning: there is a little salt in the language as the video begins, so if you are at work or doing your daily reading of the blog to your 5 year old, you've been warned.
