Bride and Groom on Gay Street, Knoxville

Here's another set in my ongoing series of photographs that seemed too good to toss, but not sufficient for a blog unto themselves. So, I try to group them for you viewing pleasure. This month's installation seems to have settled on trees, trains and brides, along with a building I don't think I've ever included.

 It seems every month I run into a bride and groom somewhere in the city. At some point I may have to make a special "brides" photo album among the other pictures of the city on the Stuck Inside of Knoxville facebook page. Last month I spotted a bride and groom in front of Church Street United Methodist Church, but I've seen them more than once on the World's Fair Park, in the Old City and in Krutch Park. This couple stood in front of the Tennessee Theater on Gay Street. May they always be as happy as that day.

Trees in the city are always pretty to me, but especially so in the fall. I recently spotted two beautiful trees in Regas Square. The sunlight hit them just right and made them appear to be luminous. The camera didn't capture the entire effect, but I thought it was pretty none-the-less. The other tree appears to be growing from the back of a building in the alley behind Market Square - from the second story! You should check it out the next time you pass.

Vehicles are a recurring theme in this recurring post and this time it's a train that captures the spotlight. I found this one sitting on the tracks in the Old City, spewing its global warming particulates into the autumn sky and looking as picturesque as possible.

 Finally, there is a building on Clinch Avenue, between Gay Street and Walnut that is different than most other buildings in our downtown. Sitting beside Le Parigo, it isn't as imposing as some and doesn't sit on the most traveled section of road, but with its stone facade (sandstone, marble?) presents a pretty face to that street which has lost buildings in the past - witness the large parking lot across the street. At least a portion of the building is for sale. Just don't mention it to St. John's Episcopal Church.

August Pictures Waiting for a Blog to Happen

I hope everyone had a great Labor Day. Let's wrap up one piece of August business with a look at the photographs that didn't quite find a full blog of their own. Rather than let them disappear forever, here they are. I'll throw in  a few words where necessary, but I'll mostly let the pictures do the heavy lifting. I hope you spot something of interest.

I included this picture simply because of the irony that the coolest (in temperature) place on the sidewalk any summer day in Knoxville is outside this door. It's ironic because TVA encourages us all to conserve energy by insulating our windows and doors while their doors - day and night - spew frigid air onto the sidewalk. I know where I would sleep if I had to spend a hot August night on the street.

Gay Street was closed one Saturday morning in August in order to allow this crane to lift these metal balconies over the building an into their new position on the back side of the building. I never thought about how those heavy-metal contraptions would climb to such heights. Now we know.

Taxis lined up on Wall Avenue

I suppose someone who is from a large, thriving city and hasn't watched Knoxville struggle to become one would be confused as to why I find a picture of a line at a theater and a line of taxis downtown to be of interest. Anyone who has followed Knoxville's fits and starts understands all to well. How many people thought it would never happen? I've actually seen the line of taxis several times. You go, Knoxville!

Young Couples, Strollers and a Warm January Day, Knoxville 2011

If Saturday was a nice day, Sunday was even better. Temperatures that struggled to get out of the thirties just last week, drifted into the sixties as if they were meant to be there. People walked around the city in short sleeves, young couples pushed strollers about the square and bikers pulled out the Harleys.

How do you ride a bike with handle bars that high? Couples with no obvious fear of heights leisurely sipped drinks in the sun while sitting on their decks many stories above the street.

It was a good day for looking at train murals. It was a good day for looking at trains and train stations.

It was a good day to pretend that the good weather would last, that living would be this easy in the weeks to come, that winter had lost its grip, rather than simply loosening it for a couple of days. It was a good day for dreaming in the city.

I've probably taken close to 1000 pictures in the month of June. Many of them were so terrible I deleted them. Some were good enough I included them in the posts. I didn't have room for some others that I thought were really good - particularly of the Dirty Guv'nahs and Blues Traveler. Yet others are fun or interesting, but there wasn't really a story they seemed to fit. I'm including them here for fun. Click to enlarge and see them better.
