Jackson Avenue Market, Knoxville, May 2011 |
There have been at least two significant openings on Jackson Avenue in the last few weeks. Continuing east from yesterday's blog, down the brick-surfaced street beside the Emporium and
Fire Street Lofts to the JFG Building. On the bottom floor of that building is the newly opened Jackson Avenue Market. It is a convenience store (though one with beer on tap), which should be helpful and handy to have in the neighborhood.

Businesses in the Carhart Building, Jackson Avenue |
Further down Jackson and on the other side of the street is the Carhart building. This beautiful building already notably includes Remedy Coffee and residences on the upper floors, but I didn't know all these additional businesses occupied the space as well.

Crush, Carhart Building, Jackson Avenue, Knoxville |
It is also home to the other of the recently opened businesses:
Crush. I previously mentioned (I'm embarrassed to write) that they had cupcakes. True, they had cupcakes at their grand opening, but they are no cupcakery. I think I still had Chattanooga's Cupcake shop on my mind. At least I was told they had other people similarly misunderstand the sign in the window. What they do have is slightly retro-styled funky clothing and accessories for women. Totally cool for the funky gal.

John H. Daniel, Jackson Avenue, Knoxville |
Across the street from Crush, slightly to the east and much farther toward the more conservative taste is John H. Daniel, a custom tailor that has been in this location for many years. It seems the oddest of the businesses for the area and shows, as if needed to be proven again, that I don't have a feel for business, because I would not expect it to work in that location and obviously, it does.
I'll need another post on down the line to finish my Jackson Avenue Stroll, but that will have to come a little farther down the line. There are other topics set for the next few days. During those next few days, let me encourage you to check out the Downtown Farmer's Market on Saturday morning and the
Children's Festival of Reading on the same day at the World's Fair Park.

It's cool that John H. Daniel has 200 tailors in Knoxville making suits for retailers in the US and Europe.

It's interesting that you should single out John H. Daniel as the business that least belongs. If I am not mistaken, JHD has been in that location in the old city since before the old city became the old city. It is one of the few links to Knoxville's glorious industrial past and the city's old nickname of "underwear capital of the world". In all seriousness, I think they've been located there since 1928.
Hey John,
I think you are correct on all counts. My point was simply that in 2011 it is the one that seems not to fit. They probably fit right in when they opened, but as the decades passed, other similar businesses faded and now it is an area of bars and funky shops, making them the oddity. I didn't mean to imply they shouldn't be there or that I'm not happy they are, simply that the area has gone in the last decades in a very different direction. I guess if pressed I'd have to say I'm proud of them for being there.
